Position Title: Board Member

Term: Three Years, Renewable

 

Role Overview:

Board members play a critical role in the success of [Nonprofit Organization Name] by providing leadership, governance, and strategic guidance to advance the organization's mission. This role description outlines the responsibilities, expectations, and qualifications for individuals serving as board members.

 

Responsibilities:

1. Governance and Leadership:

  • Actively participate in board meetings, committee meetings, and strategic planning sessions.

  • Make informed decisions that align with the organization's mission and values.

  • Uphold the highest ethical and legal standards and act in the organization's best interests.

  •  

2. Strategic Planning:

  • Collaborate with fellow board members and staff to develop and review the organization's strategic goals and objectives.

  • Provide valuable input and insights to shape the organization's long-term vision and direction.

 

3. Financial Oversight:

  • Review and approve annual budgets, financial statements, and financial policies.

  • Participate in fundraising efforts and contribute personally as feasible.

 

4. Advocacy and Ambassadorship:

  • Act as an ambassador for the organization within the community.

  • Promote awareness of the organization's mission and programs.

 

5. Committee Involvement:

  • Serve on one or more board committees (e.g., finance, governance, fundraising, marketing) as needed.

  • Fulfill committee responsibilities, attend meetings, and provide expertise.

 

 

6. Evaluation and Accountability:

  • Participate in the annual evaluation of the organization's performance and impact.

  • Hold the executive director accountable for achieving organizational goals.

 

7. Resource Development:

  • Contribute to fundraising efforts by cultivating donors, attending events, and identifying potential funding opportunities.

 

8. Conflict of Interest and Confidentiality:  

  • Disclose any potential conflicts of interest promptly.

  • Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information related to the organization.

 

Expectations:

  1. Regular Attendance: Attend board meetings, committee meetings, and special events regularly.

  2. Active Participation: Engage actively in discussions, share expertise, and ask questions when needed.

  3. Commitment: Serve a minimum term of [term length, e.g., 2 or 3 years], with the option for re-election.

  4. Financial Support: Contribute financially to the organization according to personal means.

  5. Advocacy: Act as an advocate for the organization in the community and among personal and professional networks.

  6. Board Development: Stay informed about best practices in nonprofit governance and seek personal and board development opportunities.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Passion for and commitment to the organization's mission.

  • Integrity, honesty, and ethical conduct.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience.

  • Expertise in relevant areas such as finance, law, marketing, or nonprofit management is a plus.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Willingness and ability to devote time and effort to board responsibilities.
